Lynch syndrome is a genetic condition that increases the risk of developing certain types of cancer, particularly colorectal cancer. This study is focused on individuals with Lynch syndrome to see if a medication called mesalamine can help prevent the development of colorectal cancer. Mesalamine is a drug that is often used to treat inflammation in the intestines. In this study, mesalamine is being tested to see if it can reduce the occurrence of both benign (non-cancerous) and malignant (cancerous) tumors in the colon.
The study involves taking mesalamine in the form of prolonged-release granules. Participants will be randomly assigned to receive either mesalamine or a placebo, which looks like the real medication but does not contain the active ingredient. The main goal is to compare the number of new colorectal tumors in those taking mesalamine versus those taking the placebo. The study will last for about 27 months, including a 24-month treatment period and an additional 3 months for follow-up. During this time, participants will undergo regular colonoscopies, which are procedures that allow doctors to look inside the colon to check for tumors.
The purpose of this study is to determine if mesalamine can effectively reduce the risk of developing colorectal tumors in people with Lynch syndrome. By participating in this study, researchers hope to find a new way to prevent cancer in individuals with this genetic condition. The results could provide valuable information on the potential benefits of using mesalamine for cancer prevention in this high-risk group.
