Chronic liver disease is a long-term condition that affects the liver's ability to function properly. This study is focused on patients with advanced stages of this disease. The main goal is to see if a medication called zinc acexamate can help improve the health outlook for these patients. Zinc acexamate is taken in the form of capsules and is being compared to a placebo, which is a substance with no active medication.
The study involves taking zinc acexamate orally at a dose of 600 mg per day. This is equivalent to 100 mg of elemental zinc, which is the part of the compound that has the active effect. The treatment aims to reduce the risk of certain health events that can occur with advanced chronic liver disease, such as liver decompensation, liver cancer, and the need for a liver transplant. The study will monitor these events over time to determine if the medication is effective.
Participants in the study will be randomly assigned to receive either the zinc acexamate capsules or a placebo. The study is designed to be double-blind, meaning neither the participants nor the researchers will know who is receiving the actual medication or the placebo. This helps ensure that the results are unbiased. The study will continue for a set period, during which the health of the participants will be closely monitored to assess the effectiveness of the treatment.
