Delayed Sleep-Wake Phase Disorder (DSWPD) is a condition where a person's sleep pattern is delayed by two or more hours compared to a typical sleep schedule. This can make it difficult to fall asleep and wake up at desired times. The study aims to evaluate the effects of a medication called tasimelteon, which is taken as a 20 mg capsule, compared to a placebo. The purpose is to see how tasimelteon affects the time it takes to fall asleep over a 28-day period.
Participants in the study will be randomly assigned to receive either tasimelteon or a placebo, which looks the same as the medication but does not contain the active ingredient. The study is conducted in a double-blind manner, meaning neither the participants nor the researchers know who is receiving the actual medication or the placebo. This helps ensure the results are not biased. The main focus is on changes in sleep onset, which will be tracked using a sleep diary kept by the participants.
Throughout the study, participants will take the medication or placebo once daily. The effects on sleep patterns will be monitored and recorded. The study will also assess other aspects of sleep, such as total sleep time and sleep disturbances, using both subjective reports from participants and objective measures like actigraphy, which is a method of monitoring rest and activity cycles. The safety and tolerability of tasimelteon will also be evaluated during the study period.
